Re: Raphael's RU-CAP

Raphael- I loved reading your post and it's highlight of the large fan community surrounding the show RuPaul's Drag Race, which thrives on the excitement and creativity of not just it's contestants, but it's fans as well. Your post reminded me of an SNL sketch with RuPaul that recently rubbed me the wrong way ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z3hTmvKe0A ), though at the time I wasn't sure I could place why. However, upon further introspection, I realized it was because the clip seems to posit that anyone (even cis-het Chad with zero ambition or excitement) could basically be successful at drag. Drag is essentialized to its physical attributes (The Tuck, The Look, The Face), with very little attention to what drag really is- a performance. This completely goes against, what I view, as the ethos of Drag Race, and what fans love most about it- that the most successful queens (shout out to Bob the Drag Queen) are not those with unlimited resources, but those who reveal their passion for drag and the (supposed?) progressive politics it (is supposed?) to stand for. Drag is more than just a costume. Thank you for the reminder!

*For some reason, Blogger will not let me post this as a comment, but I still wanted to respond! Sorry for the confusion!
